At the journal club on October 15, 2018, Fatima gave a talk about Weight-loss pills. She explained that obesity is a medical condition defined by excess body fat associated with negative health problems. It can be diagnosed using the body mass index (BMI). Obesity can be caused by excessive calorie intake, medical conditions such as Prader-Willi syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, osteoarthritis, and genetics. Obesity can be managed by lifestyle modification, weight loss pills, and surgery. Drugs such as Sibutramine, Orlistat, Liraglutide, are FDA approved though associated with severe side effects. At the end of her presentation she concluded that the use of pills may not be a solution since it is only effective over a long period of time. Healthy eating habit and increased physical activity remains the best option for management of obesity.
